MORNING showers gave way to a bright and sunny afternoon as locals celebrated Australia Day in parks and beaches around the Redlands.
Wide brim hats and green and gold caps were the headwear of choice while lunch spreads included Aussie favourites like sausages, meat pies and lamingtons.
Thorneside local Nic Bonastre enjoyed some fun in the sun at Beth Boyd Park with youngest daughter Thea and partner Danielle.
The father of two has spent every Sunday morning in the park since starting a dads group for Redlands fathers who want to enjoy some alone time outdoors with their children.
He said Australia Day was about spending time with family and taking in all the country had to offer.
"We usually like to spend Australia Day at the beach," he said.
"I will be taking the girls to Bribie Island to see my folks today.
"Probably one of the greatest things about Australia is our beaches and its always good weather in January so usually a beach day is on the cards."
Mr Bonastre said he had some ideas in mind for expanding the dads group, which had been running since July to help new and expecting fathers settle into a change in lifestyle.
He said he would reassess the time and venue to make it more appealing for parents who were not able to give up their time on a Sunday morning.
"I will be putting a poll out on the (Facebook) group to find out from the group what is more workable for them," Mr Bonastre said.
"I think a lot of them like the Saturday afternoon idea. The other thing I thought of was hosting it at the Waterloo Hotel or something like that where dads can grab a beer, because sometimes that can be more appealing in this heat."
Wellington Point Recreation Reserve was also buzzing throughout the day as locals took to the water to cool off from the afternoon sun.
Celebrations are likely to continue into Monday when the public holiday is in full swing.
