BIRKDALE land closed to the public since European settlement will open its gates in April as council seeks feedback on its future uses.
The blocks on Old Cleveland Road - dubbed the Birkdale Community Precinct - will be open to the community on April 16 and 17.
The precinct includes 61.78 hectares of former Commonwealth land - suggested in the past for uses including a zoo and a university - and Willards Farm.
The land is also home to the US Army-built World War II radio receiving station, which was state heritage listed in July 2020.
The site is almost 10 times the size of The Gabba and its surrounding facilities.
Council also wants to buy an adjoining block owned by Air Services Australia.
The open days in April will include guided tours on a trackless train, an animal petting zoo, music, and signage and displays about the history of the site.
Redland Museum will provide information, show displays and serve their famous Devonshire teas.
Cr Paul Bishop said the open days would allow community members to walk the land and learn about its rich history.
"There are just so many stories from the site's past that can inspire future uses," Cr Bishop said.
"I would also love to hear any other stories about the site from the community."
Mayor Karen Williams said the 62 hectares of community land could be transformed into a world-class precinct.
The site came under Commonwealth control in the 1940s and was bought by council in 2019.
Council asked five urban design and landscape architecture firms to develop ideas for the site under themes including education, agriculture, history, environment and recreation.
The community shared their ideas for the land under a Redland City Bulletin story last week, with many readers saying it should remain bushland to protect native wildlife.
Some advocated for a sports precinct or a caravan park.
Their ideas will be on display at the Birkdale Community Precinct.
Community consultation will close on Tuesday, May 4.
Council will then prepare a draft vision and begin a master plan.
The Birkdale Community Precinct will be open to residents on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, 17 from 10am to 4pm.
