REDLANDS Town Crier Max Bissett is retiring after 16 years of service, having made his last call on Wednesday at council's final general meeting for 2021.
The 82-year-old, who is about to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary with wife Judy, has become a local favourite since being appointed in 2005.
Mr Bissett labelled Redlands the jewel in Queensland's crown as he bid farewell to the position in his final speech.
He started with three strong yells of Oyez to the ringing of his bell before speaking fondly of the area and his time as crier.
"Since my appointment in 2005, I have been privileged to promote our area," he said.
"Two of the major requirements for a town crier are a strong voice and a stout pair of boots.
"I reflect on my time as your town crier with some pride.
"I am grateful for the support of my wife Judy, who designed and constructed my regalia, which we have agreed will be given to council for use by my successor."
Mayor Karen Williams said Mr Bissett had devoted many hours to the role, and had done so voluntarily.
"He has been an incredible community member and a good ambassador for our tourism when he visits other communities, particularly those town crier championships," she said.
"We have come to know Max as a very kind and empathetic person who never expects recognition for what he does, he simply just loves our beautiful Redlands Coast and its community.
"Council very much appreciates the many hours he has devoted to his official duties."
Cr Williams said Mr Bisset - who lives at Redland Bay - was a reminder that history was important to communities and should not be forgotten.
"Thankfully, he has never been called on to perform some of the more antiquated tasks that Town Criers once performed, such as administering floggings and locking reprobates in the stocks," she said.
"It is always fantastic younger generations show an interest when they first see him do a cry."
Council is now looking for a new town crier to fill Mr Bissett's boots and keep the tradition alive in the Redlands.
