The Queensland Police Service has reminded residents to think about security ahead of warmer weather

Sergeant Rob Duncan said residents should be aware as warmer months approach, which were typically when thefts began to increase.

"As we start getting warmer weather more people are going to be heading out and about," he said.

"We want to remind people to be security conscious about their houses, cars and belongings."

According to Sergeant Duncan being security conscious included keeping valuables and car keys out of sight, ensuring security screens were correctly installed and making sure cars and houses were locked when unattended or overnight.

The police sergeant said they were small changes for residents to make, but changing security habits would reduce the number of thefts, as many were opportunistic.

"Just don't invite thieves in," Sergeant Duncan said.

"If you give them opportunities, sooner or later an opportunist will come along and take them."

Sergeant Duncan also recommended home owners should consider a home surveillance system if they had the means, as cameras are readily available and footage could be used by police to investigate nearby crimes.

In the case of theft or other crimes, Sergeant Duncan said residents should not let the incident go unreported as police could only respond to crimes they were aware of.

"It's the age-old thing, we're only as good as the information we get," he said.

"We can only respond to places where we know there's crime."
