Mayor Karen Williams said the team had competed against Brisbane and Moreton Bay regional units over three mock scenarios.
“The scenarios were a motor vehicle accident with multiple casualties requiring intensive treatment and support, a forensic search and a virtual reality scenario,” Cr Williams said.
“These competitions are an opportunity for regions to come together, network and take on challenges and they serve a very practical purpose.
“They give SES units the chance to put training into practice and fine-tune their processes so they continue to be best prepared for emergencies.”
Cr Williams, also chair of the local disaster management group, congratulated the unit, saying their win showed their high level of skill and ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of people in the Redlands.
“To pit themselves against the best in the south-east and win is an outstanding achievement and bears witness to what I already know – we have one of the hardest-working, dedicated, professional units in Queensland,” Cr Williams said.
The team members of Daniel Tuckwood, Elizabeth Harris, Joel Muraca, Justin Kirby, Richard Murphy, Alex Baines, were co-managed by Gemma Kuhn and Stephanie Samuels and mentored by senior SES members, including Anne-Marie Bennett and former local controller Tom Short.
The team has trained once or twice a week to prepare for the competition.
They will take on teams from across Queensland at the state event at Rockhampton next year.
