A 20-YEAR strategy for dealing with erosion at Amity Point is in place, with council endorsing a Shoreline Erosion Management Plan for the coastal area on North Stradbroke Island.
Mayor and Redland City Coastal Adaptation Strategy Steering Committee chairwoman Karen Williams said the Amity Point SEMP clarified complex causes of shoreline erosion and provided management options and recommendations.
The Amity Point plan is the first SEMP produced by Redland City Council.
Work on the plan started in the 2015-16 financial year. The strategy is considered to be a 20-year plan and recommendations will be implemented over that time.
In 2017, council was prompted to start emergency works when up to four metres of land along a 30 metre strip eroded into the sea.
Cr Peter Mitchell said an implementation plan would be developed now that the plan had been endorsed by council.
"The SEMP gives us a clearer idea of works that may address erosion issues and will inform the implementation plan in addressing how this could be done," Cr Mitchell said.
"The SEMP makes recommendations regarding shoreline erosion management at Amity but does not specifically address issues such as costs, land tenure, access and rock supply."
Cr Williams said significant research and consultation had taken place.
"Amity is a declared erosion prone area under the Coastal Protection and Management Act 1995 and has a long history of significant erosion resulting in loss of property and assets," she said.
"People are drawn to this popular coastal destination but there is an ongoing battle with the forces of nature.
"In developing the plan, council established a project-specific community reference group including the divisional councillor, affected property owners, local residents and community groups."
Cr Williams said the SEMP covered the southern, central and northern reaches of Amity.
"It makes recommendations regarding physical works such as beach nourishment and supporting the existing sea wall, as well as areas where further technical studies are required," she said.
