Major Redlands arterial roads, quiet suburban streets among locations motorists could be caught out by mobile police speed cameras

State government data has revealed more than 60 active mobile speed camera sites exist across the Redlands, including on some of the city's major arterials.

They include Old Cleveland Road, German Church Road, Cleveland-Redland Bay Road and quieter suburban streets like Hardwood Drive at Mount Cotton and Weinam Street at Redland Bay.

More than 25 per cent of the state's 124 road deaths to June 20 this year have taken place in the south-east and Brisbane policing regions, which takes into account most of the Redlands.

It represents a rise of 50 per cent on the same point in 2020, while deaths across Queensland have increased by 13.8 per cent.

Two motorbike riders have lost their lives on Redlands roads in the past fortnight, including a 40-year-old who collided with a car at the intersection of Mount Cotton and Henderson roads at Sheldon this week.

Mobile speed camera sites are determined based on a number of criteria, including the number of speed related crashes on a stretch of road and whether high-risk speeding is common in the area.

Motorists caught less than 13km/h over the limit will be hit with a $177 fine and one demerit point, while those in the next bracket - which is up to 20km/h over the limit - will be stung $266 and three demerit points.

Speeds more than 40km/h above the limit attract a $1245 ticket, eight demerit points and a six month licence suspension.

The average fine is $210, which equates to about five hours work based on the average Queensland wage.

Road Policing commissioner Ray Rohweder said earlier this year that police would not tolerate reckless and dangerous road behaviour.

"No matter how powerful your vehicle may be, the law will catch up to you and you will be held accountable for your foolish behaviour," he said.

"If you have a need for speed, take your car to a race track. It is as simple as that."

North Stradbroke Island also has had issues with speeding in recent times.

Police regularly patrol East Coast Road at Point Lookout and Main Beach, which has a speed limit of 60km/h.

The highest speed detected on North Stradbroke in the seven days to June 18 was 101km/h in a 70km/h zone.

Redlands roads with approved speed camera sites are as follows. Multiple sites may exist on a single road.

Capalaba: Old Cleveland Road, Moreton Bay Road, Finucane Road, Old Cleveland Road East, Mount Cotton Road, Ney Road, Redland Bay Road, Smith Street, Neumann Road.

Birkdale: Bailey Road, Old Cleveland Road East, Randall Road, Collingwood Road, Quarry Road, Dorsal Drive, Birkdale Road.

Thornlands: Boundary Road, Panorama Drive, Ziegenfusz Road, Cleveland-Redland Bay Road,

Cleveland: Bloomfield Street, Smith Street, Wellington Street, Passage Street, Queen Street, Middle Street.

Victoria Point: School Road, Bunker Road, Colburn Avenue, Link Road, Cleveland-Redland Bay Road, Point O'Halloran Road.
